SLAM completed a six-month renovation of the 220,000 SF headquarters of Vistra Energy (VST: NYSE), a Texas-based energy company with an integrated portfolio of competitive businesses consisting primarily of its retail electricity provider, TXU Energy, and its power generator, Luminant. The project entailed co-locating 1,200 employees to the Irving, Texas, facility in December 2017. SLAM provided architecture, planning/programming, interior design, structural engineering, and branding/graphic design services.
Working with company leadership to merge three distinct cultures and transform the new workplace environment to “one” Vistra, a centerpiece of the company culture, SLAM designed interior spaces that demonstrate and encourage company values of teamwork, unity, and assurance that employees feel relevant and appreciated. The new, completely open-office environment at Vistra created an opportunity to densify the workplace for some departments and provide collaborative and innovative spaces throughout the building. SLAM doubled the capacity and variety of conference and meeting rooms available to all employees. Individual work stations for the technology services employees were reconfigured from 64 SF to 25 SF per person. The new density promotes collaboration through visual and acoustical accessibility amongst team members. A new commercial floor for Luminant was also designed by SLAM, borrowing from the firm’s trade floor design expertise.
“We are excited to offer Vistra employees a true sense of place championed by their leadership,” says Monika Avery, IIDA, LEED AP, principal, SLAM. “This project creates an efficient workplace across all levels. A completely open office environment maximizes the right amount of space to increase productivity and the amenities that inspire employee satisfaction.”
A 5,000 SF area of multiple conference rooms was transformed into a multi-function destination called the Recharge Café, a new concept that was not available to employees from any of the consolidated units. The technology-ready Café is a place for employees to eat, work alone or in groups, collaborate, or hold meetings for up to 250 people. Located along an exterior wall, the Café contributes to employee well-being, affording daylight and views to the outside framed by custom designed window port holes. The space introduces vibrant colors complementing the Vistra brand palette that extend to the earthy vinyl plank flooring with intermittent dashes of lime green. The industrial feel of the building was retained in the exposed concrete and refined elements of the suspended perforated ceiling feature, which serves to lower the volume of the large space and create a more intimate feel. Food service is provided by a variety of local vendors that rotate daily. Cold beverages are stored in coolers and offered complimentary to employees.
SLAM designed a new executive boardroom providing a custom designed table with seating for 25, and an additional perimeter bench for 10. Top tiered technology enables seamless and intuitive A/V display and wireless communications tools accessible by touchscreen. The room design highlights the Vistra brand with a horizon shaped ceiling element, brand palette inspired glass walls and logo, packaged in a sophisticated and elegant custom mill work teak wood wall paneling, prefabricated metal panels, and acoustical wall treatment elements. The room has direct access to an executive full-service pantry and kitchen.
Other amenity area enhancements were made to the fitness center, three-story Atrium was refurbished with soft seating to support meetings and collaboration between employees, a new reception desk, flooring and ceiling in the entry area.
An additional new amenity, the “Bit Bar,” offers technology services on demand for device and software training and troubleshooting, is located centrally on the second floor, immediately upon employee entry from the garage connector for convenient access.
