A family comfort room with large floor-to-ceiling windows is located at the end of the unit and provides home-like amenities, laptop counter, and views to nature. Respite rooms in the unit offer families a place to be together in an intimate and calming environment.

Evidence Based Design strategies were implemented throughout the unit, bringing best-in-class design and the latest research to develop an environment that promotes healing and addresses safety. For patient comfort, the design focuses on family-centered care with generous family areas in each patient room and private Family Respite rooms.

The new three-story glass atrium in the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Pavilion provides a separate entrance to the Center, while seamlessly connecting it to the main hospital to create a “hospital within a hospital”.

The lofty atrium gives way to the Family Waiting Area, offering the comfort of a fireplace, natural materials and home-like finishes.

For staff, streamlining work flows and functional efficiencies was key. The unit is divided into Pods, each with its own central nurse station and support spaces. The “Pods” centered around eight patient rooms, four on each side of the bed-wing core, designed to expedite clinician and nursing response time to patient needs, and reduce movement and supplies in the corridors.

The new addition also includes third floor shell space for the future relocation of the intensive care unit, which will provide an additional 32 beds, creating a comprehensive critical care wing..
