The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM), a national fully-integrated multi-disciplinary architecture firm, has implemented a new file-sharing cloud solution to its collaborative practice. With offices located in Atlanta, Boston, Syracuse, N.Y., and Glastonbury, Conn., the firm recognized a need to better communicate with each other among offices in order to meet project deadlines and increase the firm’s productivity overall.
SLAM partnered with Panzura’s Global Cloud Storage System to implement a solution that would decrease the time spent or lost on waiting for files to open due to the delays in data transfer. As architectural projects involve multiple complex 3D models and graphically intense files, opening these files that come through from the various offices caused serious latency issues. Panzura’s global file-system technology transforms cloud storage into a globally distributed file system which has consolidated and centralized the firm’s data across all offices. The files can now be shared from one location by employees across all of the offices and accessed at LAN speed.
The firm realized that they had to find a way to make their workflow more efficient with their current work on the Notre Dame Campus Crossroads project as creating the design of the $400 million, 750,000-square-foot football stadium would require resources and effective collaboration across all of their offices.
“Cloud computing service is a necessity, not an option,” John Stergakis, the firm’s director of Information Services explains. “It’s no longer if, it’s when.”
SLAM has been using the Panzura solution for a year and has saved more than a million dollars. The gains in productivity have amounted to about $840,000 and the firm has additionally saved about $300,000 by avoiding the costs in investing in WAN acceleration, back-up devices, additional storage, archiving, and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions. These savings are attained on the architectural side without taking into account the savings achieved in the marketing and IT departments.
“In order to stay competitive and meet our business objectives and streamline our work flow, it was necessary and a great match for SLAM to partner with Panzura,” says Stergakis. “We in IT refer to the Panzura solution as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of the Tech Industry.”
