INSIGHT

For decades, the Patsy DiLungo Veteran’s Memorial Ice Rink hosted a variety of events such as East Haven High School, East Haven Youth Hockey, Guilford High School, Shoreline Figure Skaters, ice skating lessons, ice hockey leagues, camps, birthday parties and private events. However, in 2019 the facility was closed due to a leak detected in the ice floor piping. In 2021, SLAM began working with the town to rescue the rink.

SOLUTION

Through an initial design feasibility study for the repair of the facility, SLAM evaluated and developed a report for several alternatives for the replacement of the ice making equipment, the ice floor and supporting spaces. SLAM, the town, and several consultants investigated the life cycle analysis, sustainability, functionality, and the cost of several different systems. To meet the town’s budget, schedule, and scope, the team recommended a phased approach in which SLAM created budgets and schedules to show cost saving efficiencies for construction.
The scope of the renovations included the replacement of the existing cold floor slam and associated piping, new dasher boards, CO and NO2 sensors, rink rubber flooring, a complete replacement of the dehumidification system, and the discontinued R404A refrigerant system. It was later expanded to include the renovations and upgrades of the front of house, restrooms, locker rooms, and the specification of a new electric ice surfacer.

IMPACT

SLAM’s design-build team worked with East Haven to develop a solution that met the budget and fast-tracked schedule. During the initial design phase, the team met on-site with representatives of the town, stakeholders, and end-users that included town employees, rink managers, and hockey coaches to review design options and plans. This group also participated in construction updates and tours, which greatly influenced the success of the project.

“

We selected SLAM - they have completed ice rinks and recreation facilities throughout the country, including the Dorothy Hamill Ice Skating Rink in Greenwich, and the breathtaking Martire Ice Arena at Sacred Heart University. The days of East Haven not doing things properly, and with the right partners is over, and SLAM is a prime example.
