SLAM design-build team completes lighthouse surgery center

Hartford, Conn. – Jan. 15, 2020 – S/L/A/M Construction Services (SLAM CS) and the design-build team, joined Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a member of Trinity Health Of New England, on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the 35,000-square foot, $26 million Lighthouse Surgery Center at 129 Woodland Street in Hartford. The new center is a joint venture between Saint Francis Hospital, Lighthouse Surgeons, a group of orthopedic and spine surgeons, and Woodland Anesthesiology Associates. The freestanding center extends the Saint Francis campus at the intersection of Woodland and Ashley Streets.

The facility features six orthopedic ORs, complete on-site sterile processing, a distinctive 26 bay pre- and post-op area, a physical therapy space, and a welcoming, double height reception / lobby area that initiates a carefully planned patient-centered care experience that extends throughout the facility.  Doctors will treat orthopedic patients with sports injuries, joint replacement and spine surgical spine patients, as well as pain management, all in one location.

“We are proud to be part of the collaborative team of Saint Francis Hospital, Trinity Health of New England and Lighthouse Surgeons to bring this new state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center to the City of Hartford and State of Connecticut,” says Eugene Torone, DBIA, president of SLAM Construction Services. “Our unique integration of design and construction fostered innovation, flexibility and responsiveness, resulting in an efficient flow of service, intuitive wayfinding and natural daylighting.”

SLAM’s multi-disciplinary in-house team provides the project with a unique integrated design-build delivery method which streamlines the process by bringing planning, design, and construction together from the early stages of the project through completion, ensuring team collaboration, quality and efficiency.

Our designers, structural engineers and construction professionals developed a structural column grid that provided an efficient framework for planning, construction and future growth. The resulting structural/planning module effectively accommodated the program, provided flexibility for future needs, and was cost effective to build. “The opening of the Lighthouse Surgery Center marks a significant step in the evolution of outpatient spine and orthopedic surgery and allows us to further meet the needs of this growing population of patients,” said Dr. John Rodis, president, Saint Francis Hospital.  “It was not long ago that patients had to spend several days in the hospital following spine surgery or a joint replacement, but thanks to our incredible team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and innovative technology, today, many of these patients can now safely go home within 23 hours of surgery.”
