Western Michigan University

School of Medicine Quad

Location: Kalamazoo, MI
Project Completed: 2014
Size: 350,000 SF

Located in downtown Kalamazoo’s central business district, the former site of a corporate research laboratory complex was reconfigured and renovated by SLAM Architects and Landscape Architects into the new home of Western Michigan University’s School of Medicine (WMU SoM). The new WMU SoM, located within the city’s medical/biomedical/life science research village district is well positioned to support WMU’s proposed objectives. With proximity to several healthcare institutions including: Borgess Health, Bronson Healthcare, as well as numerous residential accommodations, restaurants, entertainment and service businesses, the SoM constituents will be exposed to an enriched educational setting within a vibrant urban context.

The SoM’s 3.09 acre site is highly visible from numerous vantage points within the city.

The majority of the site is landscape campus open space with convenient adjacent on-street parking and off-street parking lots. The landscape treatment for the site is mainly open lawn with the exception of the southwest corner that is planted with a mixture of ornamental tree and shrub species. The street frontage along the adjoining Portage Street and areas to the South of the site have street tree plantings. One significant central open space area was developed for the project. This open space provides valuable outdoor gathering space for the entire campus community. The central open space transitions from an informal use and aesthetic to a more active and formal paved courtyard space that can be used for WMU campus ceremonies, educational programs and spontaneous activities.
