Shaw Center at Hillyer College

Location: West Hartford, CT
Project Completed: 2012
Size: 10,000 SF

SLAM provided complete, integrated design/build services for a two-story, 10,000-SF addition and renovation to an outgrown classroom building originally constructed in the 1960’s. This project was designed to accommodate the growing enrollment of over 600 students and 40 faculty-members at the University of Hartford’s Hillyer College. This two-year, liberal arts associate’s degree program now boasts a highly-supportive, state-of-the-art learning environment, and the building has resumed its place as the “hub of campus life” for the Bloomfield Avenue campus. The new addition houses additional classrooms, a conference room, faculty offices and a large common area to encourage increased collaboration between students, faculty and staff.

The addition and renovation was completed on an occupied college campus, where a challenge is always completion of the project while minimizing disruption to campus activities. Not only was the project team able to achieve this goal while also completing the project on time and on budget, but it also had a measurably-positive impact on the students. This was highlighted by a student group that developed a music and dance performance piece inspired by the design and construction of the building. The students performed the piece at the building’s dedication ceremony and continue to promote the transformation of the building within the College community.
