“This remarkable building exceeded our expectations… it is transformational for students and faculty… gives the School an architectural presence that will serve us for decades.” (Power Boothe, Art School Dean)
This SLAM-led design/build project allows the Hartford Art School to bring together the disciplines that creatively use digital technology and renovate existing buildings so that they reflect current instructional standards.
what mattered to the client
  • to renovate and expand outdated facilities despite constricted site, limited budget ($5M) and tight timetable (20 mo.)
  • to enhance and leverage Art School’s image on campus
  • to benefit from the efficiencies of shared labs and project spaces, as well as the synergistic aspects of the interdisciplinary nature of computer technology
outcomes-based design RESULTS
  • SLAM accountability for both design and construction resulted in an award-winning project, delivered under budget and on time.
  • The new addition is centrally sited and visible from the main quadrangle; the striking façade plays with “artistic” materials (wood, zinc, steel, and ceramics), creating a vibrant presence for the Art School on the university campus.
  • The building’s program is grouped around a central, two-story atrium/common space with expansive walls for hanging art and projecting images, promoting community and interaction for students and faculty.
