Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center

Center for Innovation

Location: Hartford, CT
Project Completed: 2012
Size: 160,000 GSF
what mattered to the client
  • to develop a culture of innovation within the institution by providing a facility that will allow interdisciplinary problem solving teams to assemble and work in a highly flexible creative environment
  • to restructure the existing space for an entirely new use
  • to keep the building operational during construction
outcomes-based design RESULTS
  • The 9,800-SF center provides a new destination for team-based research and problem solving among medical practitioners and administrators. The center includes a resource library, flexible simulation suites, collaboration studios, rapid prototyping facilities, workshops, and group and individual workspaces. The facility is supported by state-of-the-art visualization technology and allows for both in-house and global collaboration.
  • The existing medical library, while well used, was oversized for its contents. This project enabled a different approach to the form, function and use of a library in the digital age. As the library net square area was reduced, its collections were carefully condensed and many of the resources became accessible online through library workstations.
  • Through careful planning and phasing the library was kept open through the entire construction process which eliminated the significant cost associated with temporarily moving the collection offsite.
