Northern Westchester Hospital

Emergency Department

Location: Mount Kisco, NY
Project Completed:2011
Size: 54,000 GSF

After struggling with an existing Emergency Department that was under pressure from increasing demand and falling short of expected patient and staff satisfaction goals, this community hospital embarked on a comprehensive effort to reinvent both the ED process and an architecture that could support real change. Fundamental to that change was the desire for this project to represent new level of integration between innovative ED planning and patient-centered care ideals that would truly transform the patient and staff experience.

A new loop road is situated to capture two new garden areas along the project perimeter to add permanent green space to the campus and integrate the healing aspects of nature into the patient experience.

Planning concepts that focused on efficient patient flow and distribution of staff resources were developed in harmony with a project that fully embraces patient-centered care concepts. Features include; a “Streets and Avenues” organization that mediates between the practicalities of staff access and a positive patient experience; dedicated adult and pediatric family rooms within the department; universal private rooms with defined family space; and generous windows that provide for daylight infused spaces and views to private perimeter gardens.
