Martha Van Rensselaer Hall

Location: Ithaca, NY
Project Completed: 2015
Size: 200,000 SF
This project involves comprehensive phased renovations to Martha Van Rensselaer Hall, Cornell’s 200,000-SF historic home of the nationally recognized College of Human Ecology. Major building systems are being replaced, exterior shell renovated, and interior reconfigured to provide a new physical environment that will support the College’s diverse disciplines while promoting formal and informal interaction.
what mattered to the client
  • to accommodate the increasingly important role that research plays for the various departments within the College (Human Development, Policy Analysis and Management, Design and Environmental Analysis, Nutritional Sciences, and Textiles and Apparel).
  • to achieve a LEED Platinum rating and improve energy performance
outcomes-based design RESULTS
  • The facility will house design studios, nutrition labs, observation rooms, and office/dry lab research space for over 100 social scientists; it will also contain a neuroscience suite with MRI that will be shared for research purposes by departments across the campus
  • A key sustainable component of the renovation is the use of a chilled beam and radiant panel system, a very “green” system that minimizes operation and maintenance costs.
