Clayton State University

Lakeview Discovery and Science Center

Location: Morrow, GA
Project Completed: 2015
Size: 58,610 SF

Sited on the eastern edge of a small pond on the rolling hills of the Clayton State University Campus, the New Science Building unfolds towards the water taking advantage of the beautiful natural setting, views, and advantage of the morning daylight. During the site selection process, SLAM advocated the merits of the selected site to create a gateway to a new sector of the campus (to be built around the pond), as well as a focal point for a three building science complex.

The two-story lab building is designed as a modern home for the sciences, featuring stacked biology and chemistry suites, which each integrate research, prep, and teaching labs. Flanking the labs are 64 and 32 person classrooms (64 sear classrooms are tiered), and faculty office suites.

Collaborative space for student / teacher interaction was critical to achieving the mission of the building. SLAM proposed an innovative indoor/outdoor “porch commons” as a solution that did not subtract from the desired amount of lab space within the program. The covered commons takes advantage of the mild Georgia climate by being open on three sides, saving significantly on both construction and operational costs. The porch commons serves additional functional and symbolic needs: Creating a gateway to the new section of campus, a covered entry for the building, a destination plaza for an enhanced pedestrian experience, as well as wedding the building to its site at the pond’s edge.

A dramatic, swooping roof runs the full length of the building as an interpretation of the Clayton State style. Prominent glazed areas of the public spaces of the building allow daylight to penetrate the building. Sustainable initiatives include sun shading, daylight harvesting, and use of recycled materials and rain water.
