New Canaan Saxe Middle School, Classroom Addition & Auditorium Renovation

Location: New Canaan,CT

The Town of New Canaan hired SLAM Construction Services (CS) to manage auditorium renovations and an addition to the Saxe Middle School. The project team included the architectural firm of JCJ Architecture, construction manager O&G Industries and environmentalist Tighe & Bond.

SLAM CS was engaged to do an initial feasibility study that defined program needs, project scope and budget and oversaw the design and construction of the project. SLAM CS managed the solicitation and award of key contracts for architectural/engineering, construction management, and environmental services. This multi-phased project consisted of a new 24,000 SF two-story addition comprised of STEM, science, art, and general classrooms. Construction also involved the complete renovation of the 60 year old 750 seat auditorium and new choral and band rooms.

The project was tightly organized and phased to minimize disruption to the students and staff. Environmental abatement and disruptive work was performed during the school breaks. Additionally, SLAM CS found a local subcontractor to remove and refurbish the existing 1950’s seating in the auditorium in lieu of purchasing new. This additional value to New Canaan Public Schools saved money, achieved the school’s environmental stewardship goal and provided a higher quality end-product.
