The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM)* participated in Relay for Life from Friday, June 17 to Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Riverfront Community Center in Glastonbury. The SLAM Team was one of the 32 teams which raised approximately $82,000 towards the American Cancer Society’s world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer.
The Relay for Life global movement involves an organized, overnight community fundraising walk to end cancer in which teams of people camp out around a track. Members of each team take turns taking laps around the track while food, games, and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie, creating a family-friendly environment for the entire community. SLAM took part in several themed laps, the Luminaria Ceremony, and a 5K at 9 a.m. the next morning. The Ceremony, which takes place after dark, remembers those lost to cancer, honors those who have fought cancer in the past, and supports those whose fight continues with candles lit inside personalized bags placed around the Relay track.
“It was great to have such a good representation of our SLAM family walking the track this year as I’m sure most of our firm has been affected by the disease in some way,” says Emily Leyland, SLAM interior designer and Team organizer. “Relay for Life is the perfect time to reflect on those we’ve lost and to be thankful for those still with us.”
The SLAM Team also held an art sale at the event ranging from unique crafts and architectural designs raising $200. In total, The SLAM Team raised over $4,000 dollars during the event towards the American Cancer Society’s fight to end cancer.
